Preparing for an Outage
If there is an upcoming outage that will impact your household, follow these tips to help yourself to be prepared.
Before the outage:
- Charge mobile phones, tablets, and laptops. Set up a mobile phone alarm clock if you usually use an alarm clock that's plugged in.
- Ensure you know how to manually operate your electric roller door/electric gates.
- Turn off stoves and heaters so they don’t come back on if you’re not home when power returns.
- Turn off and unplug any electrical appliances so they won’t be affected by any potential electrical spikes when the power is turned back on.
- If the outage occurs in the evening, have torches with full batteries handy.
During the outage:
- Keep door of fridges and freezers closed to ensure items stay cold/frozen.
- Consider visiting friends or a public venue that has power during the outage.
After the outage:
- Reset alarm clocks, security systems and reticulation systems.
