Wandering and Nuisance Animals

Wandering Dogs:

Dogs must be secured at your property.  Dog owners must ensure that their fencing is secure such that a dog cannot leave the premises of its own accord.  This means fencing that is adequately secure (including side gates) and of a height at which the dog cannot leap over.  Furthermore, you must make reasonable attempts to ensure that your dog does not dig out of your property.

A dog that is in a public place or a private place without the consent of the occupier and where no person is exercising effective control is deemed to be wandering at large.

If your dog is found to be wandering at large it may be seized and detained by Council.  Council aims to reunite wandering pets with their owners as soon as is practically possible.  If your pet is registered and microchipped, Council has the capacity to quickly identify you as the owner and return your pet.

Owners whose dog is found to be repeatedly wandering may incur an expiation as set by the Dog and Cat Management Board of SA.  It is an offence under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 for a dog to be wandering at large.

Wandering Cats:

In accordance with the Cats By-law 2016, cats are not to wander and cause nuisance to other residents.  Nuisance is considered to be unreasonable interference with the peace, comfort or convenience of a person and may include displaying aggressive behaviour or creating unpleasant noise or odour.

Cat Traps:

Council provides a cat trap agreement hire service.  The community can hire a cat trap, for which a $50.00 bond is payable.  When a cat is caught within the trap the resident can call the Council Office on (08) 8671 0010, or the call will be automatically transferred to an on-call officer after hours.  The cat will be picked up by the Council Ranger or an authorised officer and taken to the pound where an attempt is made to contact the owner.

The trap will be returned to the customer.  The customer can then return the trap to the Council to receive their bond refund.

Cat traps can assist in reducing the number of unidentified cat complaints and can reduce the number of feral cats in our local environment.
